Experience Divine Grace at the Origin of the Ganges, One of India’s Most Sacred Rivers

The Gangotri Dham yatra is most sacred yatra on earth. The Gangotri (गंगोत्री धाम ) shrine is located at 3200 mts. above sea level, in the Himalayas. It is located 100 kms. away from Uttarkashi. It is the place where river goddess Ganga is worshipped, and from where it starts it’s descent. Gangotri is also known for its charming scenic beauty with snow-covered peaks of Himalayas in front and river Bhagirathi flowing close by. The place makes one feel close to god. It is said that those who bath in its waters get their body and soul purified for life.

The temple looks amazing at night with lights on. The shrine was built in the 18th century on the right bank of river Ganga (Bhagirathi) by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa. Visitors can stay in ashrams located on the other side of the river, some of which provide accommodation. The shrine can be visited from May to October.

🌊 Why Visit Gangotri Dham?

  • 🌼 Origin of the Ganges: Though the actual source of the river is the Gaumukh Glacier (19 km ahead), Gangotri Temple marks the symbolic origin of the Ganga River.

  • 🛕 Temple Dedicated to Goddess Ganga: The shrine was constructed by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha commander, in the early 18th century and is made of pristine white granite.

  • 🏔️ Surreal Himalayan Setting: Located at an altitude of 3,100 meters (10,200 ft), Gangotri is surrounded by snow-covered peaks, deodar forests, and spiritual silence.

  • 📿 A Key Destination in Char Dham Yatra: Gangotri is an integral stop in the Chota Char Dham circuit, attracting lakhs of devotees during the open season from May to October.

📍 Gangotri Temple – Where Heaven Meets Earth

The Gangotri Temple is set on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, which is later joined by the Alaknanda to form the Ganga. According to mythology, King Bhagirath performed intense penance here to bring the Ganga down from the heavens for the salvation of his ancestors. Moved by his devotion, Lord Shiva caught the mighty river in his locks to soften her descent to Earth.

Devotees visit Gangotri not only for darshan but also for spiritual purification, as bathing in the river is believed to cleanse sins and bless the soul.
